The idea of creating an international environmental zone on the territory of three countries – Belarus, Poland, Ukraine – arose in 1991.

«Man and the Biosphere»

After the meeting of the President of the Republic of Belarus with the General Director of the UNESCO, the Ministry of natural resources together with the Belarusian national Committee for the UNESCO program «Man and biosphere» was instructed to create a reserve of national importance in the region of West Polesie and consider the possibility of including the reserve in the transboundary protected area (Belarus — Poland — Ukraine).
In 2001, the scientific project “Creation of the international protected natural area “West Polesie” on the borders of Belarus, Poland and Ukraine under the auspices of UNESCO and financial support of the OSCE” was launched.
The Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus officially announced the Republican landscape reserve “pribuzhskoe Polesie” (may 30, 2003).

Its main objective:

  • preservation of the unique natural landscape in its natural state with populations of rare and endangered species of plants and animals;
  • protection of rare forest biocenoses in the territory.

In the same year, the Brest Executive Committee announced the creation of the biosphere reserve «Pribuzhskoe Polesie» in the Brest region with an area of 48024 hectares (resolution No. 628 of 09.12.2003).
The reserve “Pribuzhskoye Polesye” received the official status of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2004 (see the Regulations on the Biosphere Reserve “Pribuzhskoye Polesye”). And in 2012, it received official confirmation of its status at the international level of the transboundary tripartite biosphere reserve “West Polesie”. It operates on the basis of three national parts – biosphere reserve “Pribuzhskoe Polesie “(Belarus), biosphere reserve” Shatsky “(Ukraine) and biosphere reserve” West Polesie” (Poland).
